A 32-year-old woman has been jailed after she burned her 8-year-old son to death.
According to reports, Anastasia Baulina from Kursk, Russia, burned Andrey after he told his stepfather that she had cheated on him.
Baulina told the court that she just wanted to scare her son and that she had immediately extinguished the flames with snow.
Judges dismissed Baulina’s claims after her daughter, 12-year-old Natalya, recounted what actually happened and said that it was her stepfather, 35-year-old Pavel, who put out the fire.
Natalya said that her mother had made her watch as she doused the 8-year-old boy with fuel before saying “let’s go watch how the scarecrow burns.”
Baulina recounted how her son had run screaming into the garden before he had fallen down on his knees. She then claimed that she extinguished the flames by covering him with snow.
But the 12-year-old gave a different story, saying it was Pavel who extinguished the fire after he heard Andrey’s screams.
Meanwhile, the mother screamed at Andrey: “I will teach you to keep your mouth shut.”
Natalya also said that his brother had begged his mother “please, don’t” before she lit the match.
The young boy was rushed to the hospital where he passed away in agony.
The court also heard how Baulina had held Andrey’s hand over a gas cooker flame when he ate food from the fridge.
She was convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
After being sentenced, Baulina smiled as she told a local newspaper: “I’m not guilty of pre-mediated murder, for sure… Yes, I wanted to scare my child, but I did not wish him dead. So it was destined by God for him and me.”
The mother denied adultery but evidence from her phone revealed that she was in another relationship.
“I live with one person, have feelings for another,” one message read.
