According to the reports, the mother left her 7-year-old son Malakye home alone when she went to visit her boyfriend. To make matters worse, the woman left the child in a locked house with no electricity or gas when it was already 10 pm.

After Hall had left the building, little Malakye managed to unlock the back door and sneak out of the house. Once outside, the boy walked onto a busy road leading to the city center only to get fatally hit by an incoming taxi.

Following the tragic accident, which took place on August 11, 2020, the 7-year-old was pronounced dead. Now, after being charged with neglect on top of other issues, Hall has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison.

“She told officers she had left the door to the premises locked so that Malakye could not go out,” prosecutor Abigail Langford said of the mother’s actions.

“She said she did not think Malakye could use the bolt on the back door. The Crown say this was a deliberate disregard for the welfare of Malakye. A deliberate decision to leave him in a house which had no electricity or gas.”

Defending Ms Hall, attorney Saf Salam suggested that the woman’s sentence should be lowered on the grounds that she’s been suffering from depression and bipolar disorder.

Passing the judgment, Judge Tahir Khan QC acknowledged that the mother likely locked the door with good intentions but pointed out that it was her actions that resulted in her son’s death nevertheless.

“The police found your mobile phone in Malakye’s clothing and you were to say you had given it to him so he could play on it while he was alone in that house which had no electricity or no gas,” the judge told Hall.

“I’ve no reason to doubt you locked the door to stop him getting out but as we know he did with those tragic consequences. This is category one harm in my judgment. The deliberate act of leaving Malakye alone and vulnerable resulted in his death.”
