A teenage boy was taken into custody after two students were shot at a high school in Virginia on Monday.
Police combed the building in search of the gunman, who was later found by officials outside Heritage High School in Newport News.
A 17-year-old girl was shot in the leg and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the side of his face.
Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said that the suspect knew the victims but did not say if he was also a student.
“We do believe that they knew each other … I don’t believe that this is an individual that is searching the community to hurt members,” he told reporters.
The chief of police also said that they were first notified of the incident at 11:38 am on Monday. Two students were reportedly rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two other students were taken to hospital for injuries sustained during the evacuation. One suffered an asthma attack while another fell while evacuating the building.
Students were instructed to go to the school’s outdoor tennis courts while officers combed the building, WAVY-TV reported.
Investigators said that they did not believe there was a danger to the community as the suspect knows the victims.
A school nearby, the Achievable Dream Academy, was also placed on lockdown.
Chief Drew said that evidence has been uncovered on the school grounds but he did not mention further details.
One person commented: “When will the society take seriously the falling apart of families and cohesive social structure? We need cohesion and family ties for this to stop. God is at the center of that whether or not people acknowledge it.”
