FBI officials announced that a body ‘matching the description’ of missing Gabby Petito has been discovered at the Bridger-Teton National Forest.
Supervisory senior resident Charles Jones made the announcement on Sunday evening. The cause of death hasn’t been confirmed and authorities are working to confirm that the remains are Petito’s.
The 22-year-old’s father, Joseph, posted a tribute to his daughter on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with a photo of Gabby adorned with a pair of angel wings.
“She touched the world,” Joseph wrote.
The campground, where the body was found, would remain closed as officials continue their investigation.
Jones told reporters: “As every parent can imagine this is an incredibly difficult time for the family, and friends, our thoughts and prayers are with them.
“We ask that you all respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of their daughter.”
Authorities in Florida have resumed the search for Petito’s missing fiancé Brian Laundrie, the person of interest in her disappearance, at an alligator-infested Florida park after he vanished from his parents’ home.
Laundrie refused to cooperate with police and on Tuesday, he vanished from his parents’ home in Florida.
His family attorney released a statement saying: “The news about Gabby Petito is heartbreaking. The Laundrie family prays for Gabby and her family.”
Police in North Port, Florida, where Petito and her fiancé shared a home together, said in a statement: “Saddened and heartbroken to learn that Gabby has been found deceased.
“Our focus from the start, along with the FBI, and national partners, has been to bring her home. We will continue to work with the FBI in the search for more answers.”
