A man in his 40s was killed and eaten by a bear while camping with his friends.
42-year-old Yevgeny Starkov was visiting the Yergaki Nature Park in Russia with his friends when the group was attacked by a giant bear after the beast appeared out of nowhere.
According to the reports, Starkov and his three friends were camping at the national park when a drooling bear approached their tents.
After attacking the 42-year-old camper, the bear allegedly began tearing him apart, prompting the three friends to run away barefoot to call for help.
“We had begun to pack our backpacks. There were two tents, and I turned my head to the left to see a bear sticking out its head, a giant one, with saliva dripping from its mouth,” one of Starkov’s friends, Anton Shelkunov, recalled.
“The bear roared and ran at us.”
While his friends managed to escape the raging beast, Starkov was caught before he could get to safety.
“I looked back, the bear was chasing us. We climbed up, around 50 meters (165ft) and saw the place where our tents were picked,” the eyewitness added.
“We saw the body [of Starkov] and the bear standing there. It was tearing his body, gnawing it. Then it got distracted, began to look at us, so we climbed higher.”
Following the bear attack, the three surviving friends walked barefoot for several hours before reaching safety and reporting the incident.
“When packing away their tent they discovered a bear. They all ran in different directions,” Igor Gryazin, the director of the national park, said. “An accident happened with the bear, with a deadly outcome.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Russian Investigative Committee confirmed that Starkov’s body has yet to be found because the friends were camping in a “very inaccessible area.”
