The newborn baby that was caught on camera being passed from her crying mother’s arms to the soldiers has been reunited with her father.
An Afghan baby girl has touched the hearts of millions of people around the globe after her mother handed her over to a US Marine in an attempt to get the child the medical attention she needed.
The incident took place at Hamad Karzai International Airport in Kabul after the Taliban descended on the capital and sparked panic among the locals.
As seen in the video taken by human rights activist Omar Haidari, the baby girl was handed over to US Marines who were guarding the wall at the airport.
To successfully lift the newborn baby to safety, one of the Marines had to lean over the barbed wire with the help of his comrades.
The heartbreaking video quickly went viral and Marine Corps spokesperson Major Jim Stenger has since confirmed that the baby in question has been reunited with her father.
“The baby seen in the video was taken to a medical treatment facility on site and cared for by medical professionals. I can confirm the baby was reunited with their father and is safe at the airport,” Stenger said in a statement to CBS News.
“This is a true example of the professionalism of the Marines on site, who are making quick decisions in a dynamic situation in support of evacuation operations.”
Later on, Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby confirmed that the newborn was only taken from her parents after they begged the soldiers to provide their daughter with the medical treatment she needed.
“The parent asked the Marines to look after the baby because the baby was ill. The Marine you see reaching over the wall, took it to a Norwegian hospital at the airport. They treated the child and returned the child to the father,” he explained.
As Kirby added, the authorities have no idea where the family has since gone and where they are now.
“The baby was returned to its father. I don’t know where they are now. Obviously we have a responsibility to return a child to the parent. I don’t know who the parent is, if they’re an SIV applicant. It was a humane act of compassion by the Marines,” he says.
