A loyal and loving dog that saved its owner from a mountain lion attack while hiking in Northern California has died after suffering several seizures.
Eva, a Belgian shepherd, suffered severe injuries after defending her owner from the hungry animal.
Her owner took to Instagram to announce the heartbreaking news of her death, writing: “We said goodbye at 9:20 this morning.”
The grieving owner described the pooch as her world, light, and best friend, adding that the world is a darker place without Eva.
“There were no changes to her condition overnight. Goodbye my beautiful sweet girl,” she wrote. “You are my world, my light, my best friend. The world is a much darker place.”
24-year-old Erin Wilson managed to avoid being mauled to death by the large cat while hiking in Northern California o May 16, thanks to the brave dog who was left with serious injuries.
Erin was hiking with her pet Eva on the Big Bar Pass in the Trinity River area when the mountain lion suddenly attacked her.
She said that her four-legged companion was a few yards ahead when the growling predator suddenly appeared, she told the Sacramento Bee.
The mountain lion them jumped at her and swiped at her left shoulder.
“I yelled, ‘Eva!’ and she came running,” she said. “And she hit the cat really hard.”
Erin said that Eva and the mountain lion fought for a couple of seconds. “And then I heard her start crying.”
The predator sunk its teeth into Eva’s head as Erin tried to beat it with rocks, sticks, and her fists. She even tried to gauge the large feline’s eyes.
“The cat had her by the left side of her head. For the next several minutes I tried everything I could to free her,” she wrote on GoFundMe.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the incident and will try to catch the mountain lion.
