A popular Afghan folk singer was reportedly killed by the Taliban after they banned music throughout the country.
Following the withdrawal of foreign troops and the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, the group made it clear that music would be banned throughout the country in accordance with Sharia laws.
Now, it has been revealed that popular folk singer Fawad Andarabi, who was known for entertaining people in the mountains with his songs, was killed by the Taliban.
As the man’s family claimed, the singer was dragged out of his home in the Andarabi Valley before being shot in the head by the militants.
According to Fawad’s son, Jawad, who spoke to Associated Press, the Taliban previously visited their family home and searched it. Their attitude towards the singer, however, was allegedly completely different during their last visit.
“He was innocent, a singer who was only entertaining people. They shot him in the head on the farm,” Jawad expressed.
Following the killing, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid informed Associated Press that the Taliban would investigate the singer’s death.
Meanwhile, local Taliban leaders vowed to catch and punish the insurgents who killed the beloved musician.
The incident has sparked fresh fears of revenge killings and a repressive, intolerant regime. While the Taliban promised to become a newer version of themselves, reports of civilian beatings and executions continue pouring from the country.
“There is mounting evidence that the Taliban of 2021 is the same as the intolerant, violent, repressive Taliban of 2001. 20 years later. Nothing has changed on that front,” Amnesty International secretary-general Agnes Callamard tweeted after Andarabi’s death.
Former Interior Minister, Masoud Andarabi, added: “Taliban’s brutality continues in Andarab. Today they brutally killed folkloric singer, Fawad Andarabi who simply was bringing joy to this valley and its people. As he sang here ‘our beautiful valley… land of our forefathers…’ will not submit to Taliban’s brutality.”
