A 74-year-old father told his daughter that he would kill himself as soon as he gets the chance after failing in a suicide pact with his late wife.
David is charged with killing his terminally ill wife Janice in December but he insisted that it was her wish to end her life.
According to reports, he allegedly suffocated his wife of 52 years before taking an overdose of prescription pills. But he was later found and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
His 49-year-old daughter, Lesley Cawthorne, has shared that he faces a life sentence unless the charge is reduced to assisted dying.
“I do not know how to live without her,” David, a minor for four decades, told his daughter from jail in Cypriot. “I’m Janice’s husband, and without her, I don’t really know who I am.”
He said that he only acted out of love for Janice, who suffered from leukemia and ‘begged’ him to end her pain.
When Lesley first talked to his dad after the tragic events, he told her: “I’m so sorry, I love you, but I want to be with your mum. I’m so sorry but as soon as I get a chance, I will kill myself.”
Lesley begged her father not to, saying she couldn’t bear to lose both of them.
“There are people out there doing bad things,” she expressed. “All my dad did was love someone.”
It was in 2016 when Janice was diagnosed with blood cancer. Both she and David had already endured heartbreak after Janice’s sister Kath passed away from leukemia.
David’s mother, Rachel, also died from ovarian cancer.
Lesley recalled how her grandmother had asked her son: “Just make it stop David, I’m so tired.”
Speaking to the Mirror, Lesley shared how her dad ‘talks to mom every night’ from his prison cell, which he shares with nine other inmates.
“He adored her,” she said. “The only thing he really cared about was giving his family a nice life. Now it’s ended like this there’s a real possibility he will die alone in a foreign prison.
“I cannot bear the thought of anyone thinking badly of my dad, because my dad really is the loveliest of men.”
“He talks about mom all the time. He tries to remember the good times and looks back on family holidays,” Lesley told the Mirror.
“Mum begged him for a long time (to assist her death) and was very clear about what she wanted. She was very much of the opinion that we have autonomy over our bodies.”
David faces a life sentence for a murder charge. An assisted suicide carries a maximum of ten years behind bars.
